Animated Son Of Liberty

by Walter McGinty, Animated Son Of Liberty Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Animated Son Of Liberty books, This is an account of a leading 18th century Scottish churchman, the Reverend John Witherspoon. His already colourful and eventful life took an unusual turn when in 1768, as a Minister of the Church of Scotland in a Paisley parish, he was persuaded to accept the office of President of the College of New Jersey, now Princeton University. Within a year of taking up this academic post, he became involved in the Colonies' struggle for Independence. He was elected to Congress in 1775 and in 1776 was the only clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence. During his time of office as a Congressman, he served on over one hundred and twenty Congressional Committees and occupied key positions on both the Board of War and the Foreign Affairs Committee. He had a hand in drafting two of the foundation documents of the thirteen United States: the Articles of Confederation and the Declaration of Independence. Later, he was to provide the Instructions to the United States Delegates at the Paris Peace Conference in 1783. He was only prevented from participating in the Constitutional Convention which resulted in the production of the Constitution of the United States of America in 1789, because he had been already commissioned by the Presbyterian Church in America to Chair the Committee that was to produce its Confession of Faith and Books of Church Order and Discipline. Witherspoon transformed the College of New Jersey by broadening its curriculum to offer courses that would provide a substantial education for any one preparing for any of the Professions, or to engage in public life. He was a colleague of the first four Presidents of the USA: Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison (teaching Madison for four years and also Aaron Burr, who became a Vice-President). He was branded as a traitor by Britain, but won huge respect in America. This is a long-awaited biography giving a unique insight to interesting aspects of an important age.

The Message Of Discipleship

by Peter Morden, The Message Of Discipleship Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Message Of Discipleship books, Soon after Jesus began his public ministry, he called his first ‘disciples’. He would teach and train them and then, after his death and resurrection, commission and empower them to go to the nations to make more ‘followers’. The risen Jesus is still calling and sending people today. If we heed his call, the result can be just as transformative and as exciting as it was for the first disciples. While there are no explicit occurrences of the term ‘disciple’ outside the Gospels and Acts, with only two further biblical references to ‘followers’ of Jesus, it is Peter Morden’s conviction that we need the entire Bible if we are going to be whole-life disciples. He reflects on Scripture and asks the primary question, ‘How do we live as committed disciples of Jesus today?’ He explores the foundations, resources and practice of discipleship in a range of Old and New Testament texts. The result is a well-rounded and satisfying picture of Christian discipleship, one that is wonderfully attractive as well as deeply challenging.

The Message Of Philippians

by J. Alec Motyer, The Message Of Philippians Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Message Of Philippians books, If you were in jail, what sort of letter would you write to your Christian friends? Would it focus on the difficulties--the poor food, cramped quarters and lonely isolation? Paul's letter to the Philippians, written from prison, has no hint of self-pity. The letter radiates joy--joy that Christ was proclaimed, joy in fellowship with the Philippian Christians and, above all, joy in Jesus himself. In this volume of the Bible Speaks Today series, Alec Motyer identifies three major themes that filled Paul's heart and mind as he wrote: the unity of the church, the person of Jesus and what he has achieved, and the call to live a life worthy of the gospel.

A Mystical Portrait Of Jesus

by Demetrius Dumm, A Mystical Portrait Of Jesus Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download A Mystical Portrait Of Jesus books, The poetic and symbolic nature of John's gospel betrays the weakness of historical-critical and other "scientific" methods of scriptural exegesis: Although valuable for the insights they do provide, scientific methods are not sensitive to the spiritual dimensions of biblical revelation.Father Dumm therefore offers something more than the traditional chapter-and-verse commentary. Understanding that all of the gospels were written after the resurrection and, consequently, that the passion narrative greatly influenced how the earlier chapters were composed, Father Dumm gives more prominence to the climax of the career of Jesus: his passion, death, and resurrection. By beginning "at the end," Father Dumm uncovers the guiding principle of this gospel. In the process he makes some surprising discoveries about the dangers of religious ritual but finds remedy for these dangers in the importance of personal mystical experience within the context of a believing community.Chapters are ?The Hour has Come,? ?Testifying to the Truth,? ?Love Gives All,? ?Love Conquers All,? ?Love One Another,? ?Abide in Me as I Abide in You,? ?That They May be One,? ?Conversion,? ?Baptism,? ?Eucharist,? ?Enlightenment,? and ?Eternal Life.?"With a rare ability to express complex theology and biblical scholarship in an engaging, readable style, Fr. Dumm offers a valuable gift to all who long to understand the Gospel of John and its truth that sets us free. A great power of the book is that it is not an impersonal exchange of information, but, like John's Gospel itself, a witness in faith to the power of love which Jesus brings from the Father and offers to us. I found A Mystical Portrait of Jesus to be as informative as a fine graduate course, and as inspiring as an outstanding retreat." Patricia H. Livingston Counselor, author, and speaker"Demetrius Dumm, using a new and daring approach, brings remarkably fresh insights to John's Gospel. In his usual lucid and clear style, he goes beyond the literal, historical, and critical approach to reveal the transcendent elements in this unique Gospel. In reading his commentary one continues to say, 'Of course, now it makes sense,' only to find that it also becomes much more challenging." Most Reverend Rembert G. Weakland, O.S.B. Archbishop of Milwaukee"This is a contemplative reading of a contemplative Gospel. Father Demetrius' study is rooted in sound biblical scholarship but available to everyone. Using the passion narrative as lens, he perceives a theme of loving service, the vocation of Jesus and his true disciples, running through the Gospel from beginning to end. Above all, he leads us into the Gospel of John as through a doorway to the experience of God." Abbot Jerome Kodell, O.S.B.

The Joy Of Discipleship

by Pope Francis, The Joy Of Discipleship Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Joy Of Discipleship books, “Dear friends, be glad! Do not be afraid of being joyful!” —Pope Francis, from The Joy of Discipleship Near the end of Luke’s Gospel, two disciples slowly make their way home from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus. At the outset, they are deeply saddened by Jesus’ tragic death. By that evening, however, they have made a 180-degree turn: from dejected disciples to followers filled with joy—a joy they simply must share with others as fast as they can. What accounts for this change? They have encountered the risen Christ! In The Joy of Discipleship, Pope Francis reminds us that joy should be one of the defining characteristics of any person who has truly encountered Jesus. This skillfully curated collection of homilies, speeches, and other documents from Pope Francis, compiled and edited by James P. Campbell, offers a fresh perspective on why Christian disciples should be so joyful in the first place and how that joy might manifest itself in our individual daily lives. Covering a broad range of themes—Christ’s Resurrection, mercy, wealth and poverty, the Christian family, and more—The Joy of Discipleship moves us to meditate on Christ and then inspires us to move out from our own four walls, jubilantly proclaiming God’s transforming love in word and deed. For anyone who wants what Pope Francis has—an active, abiding, authentic love for Jesus Christ, for the Church, and for the people of this world—The Joy of Discipleship will point the way. “This volume gives us a portrait of the Pope and what amazing joy fills his life, his mind, his teaching . . . his discipleship!” —From the foreword by Daniel Cardinal DiNardo
